Not only do you need to choose your brand of whisky with care but you need to serve it in the perfect manner as
well. If you are going to pour yourself a lovely glass of single malt, should you drink it with or without ice?
Well, there is no right or wrong answer; it does come down to personal preference after all! However, you will find
that adding ice to a single malt is one of the most contentious issues in the world of whisky.
A lot of people claim that ice cubes have no place in a delicate, well-distilled malt. Others, however, say that the
welcome drop in temperature results in a cleaner and smoother taste.
In fact, Sam MacDonald, of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, has offered another alternative; adding a little bit of
water! He believes that adding a little bit of water can amplify the flavor of the whisky, especially if it is cask
strength.
He has stated that ice will dilute the flavor whereas water won’t. Nevertheless, he, like many other experts, states
that the best way to drink whisky is neat.
The issue here is temperature. If you add ice to the whisky, you are going to be confusing all of the flavors that
have been so carefully balanced. This means that your tongue is not going to pick up all of the intricate flavors.
So, if you do feel like you need some ice, simply put in one or two cubes. Don’t go overboard!
